Stoking the digestive fire: kapālbhāti kriya

Kapalabhati is a shat kriya involving rapid and forceful exhales and passive inhales. It is said to remove stagnant air in the heart and lungs through the rapid recycling of air. It also stokes agni, or the digestive fire, strengthens the lungs and is a wonderful and invigorating way to prepare for asana or pranayama practice. Begin slow and steady with a round of 12 pulses. Sit and notice the effect before building speed or repetitions. Best practiced on an empty stomach (morning is best)!Contraindications include pregnancy, heavy menstrual cycle, hernia, anxiety, gastric illness or discomfort, high or low blood pressure, heart disease, glaucoma, detached retina. Cease the practice if you feel light headed or overly tense. Follow the practice with observation and gentle breathing.
